EAA’s Pioneer Airport Opens
Saturday, May 1, 2009

Enjoy spring with a family trip to EAA AirVenture Museum and Pioneer Airport located in Oshkosh, just east of US 41 and State Road 44, at 3000 Poberezny Road. The new flying season opens Saturday, May 1 at Pioneer Airport, with vintage aircraft activities, plus Young Eagles flights. During the summer months (May-October), a short tram ride from the museum takes you to Pioneer Airport, our unique “living history” re-creation of what airports were like during the early days of air travel.

More than 50 vintage airplanes are displayed in seven period hangers designed to take you back to aviation’s “Golden Age” of the 1920s and 30s, a time when the magic of flying astounded and charmed the whole world. Fascinating displays include a tribute to the legendary local air racer, designer, and builder Steve Wittman, namesake of Oshkosh’s Wittman Regional Airport. Younger visitors will enjoy a play area with swings and pedal planes. For kids aged between 8 and 17, a free Young Eagles airplane flight may be available.

Most important of all, Pioneer Airport is a place to savor the sights and sounds of vintage flying machines in their “natural habitat.” Flights take place from Pioneer Airport’s grass runway every day during the season when weather permits. You may also see demonstration flights from planes such as EAA’s replica of Charles Lindbergh’s Spirit of St. Louis and the stunning Pitcairn Mailwing biplane once flown by Howard Hughes. Depending on availability and flying conditions, you may want to experience a memorable jaunt in one of several vintage aircraft:

  • 1929 Travel Air E-4000, a classic open-cockpit biplane. Seats 1 passenger, $70. (Must be 16 years of age to ride.)
  • 1927 Swallow, a unique and newly restored bi-plane is a dream flight. Seats one passenger, $70. (Must be 16 years of age to ride.)

Pioneer Airport is open on Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays from the first weekend in May through October. Open daily Memorial Day to Labor Monday-Saturday 8:30am to 5:00pm,Sunday 10:00am to 5:00pm. Pioneer Airport is closed for flights during the annual EAA AirVenture convention, but the hangars are open for aircraft viewing.

Sept 2-22: Life Saving Mission in Jeopardy at OAHS- Need Community Help

The Oshkosh Area Humane Society is putting out an urgent request for help. We are currently FULL TO CAPACITY in both our shelter and foster homes with cats and kittens. In 2009 we pledged to never euthanize any healthy adoptable animal because of space constraints - that is our Life Saving Mission. But our mission may soon be in jeopardy if we do not find adopters and/or foster homes for our cats and kittens.

So we have reduced our adoption fees to just 22 CENTS for the next 22 days, from September 1 – 22, - on all of our 222 cats and kittens!

If you can't adopt but are interested in temporarily fostering a cat or kitten please contact sharon@oahs.org or call (920) 303-3166.

Rescheduled due to rain: 1st Annual Dave’s Tee’s off at MS Golf Outing September 17th

Oshkosh—After personally battling MS along with three other family members, Dave Blavat has made it his personal mission to raise money for the MS Society so that one day no other family will have to endure the slowly debilitating consequences of this disease.

Multiple Sclerosis is an unpredictable and often disabling disease that interrupts the flow of information from the brain to the body. Many times people with symptoms of MS dismiss or overlook them as no big deal, but after diagnosis, they realize the signs were there. Common MS symptoms include numbness in the hands or feet, occasional temporary sight loss, chronic exhaustion and cognitive disorders.

One in every 500 residents in Wisconsin lives with MS, giving our state one of the highest incidence rates in the country. While the progress, severity and specific symptoms of MS in any one person cannot yet be predicted advances in research and treatment are giving hope to those affected by the disease. The goal of this event is to help in the fight to find better treatments, options and ultimately a cure.

Mark your calendars. The Tee’d Off at MS Charity Golf Outing will be held on Friday, September 17th, 2010 at Lake Breeze Golf Club in Winneconne, WI. All proceeds will go to The National Multiple Sclerosis (MS) Society, helping to fund research and education to help find a cure. Volunteers, sponsors and of course, golfers are all needed to make this event a success.

The 18-hole scramble begins with a 12:00 pm shotgun start. A box lunch will be served on the course and a picnic dinner will be held in the clubhouse afterward. Door prizes, silent auction and a raffle will be available to all golfers and attendees. Golf registration is $80 per person and is open to the public. Sponsorship opportunities are available ranging from $100–$3000.

For more information, contact Shana at shana@fortyfournorth.com or call her at 426-1970 or Dave at dblavat@charter.net

November 6:

The Fox Valley Symphony Announces 2010-2011 Concert Season

November 6, 2010

Faye Seeman, Harp

            Mozart                                     Overture to The Impresario

Gustavo Leone                        Como un Sueño, for harp and orchestra

Mendelssohn                           Symphony No. 5, “Reformation Symphony”

This concert has the broadest variety of characters and content in the 10-11 season. It begins with a light, energetic appetizer, moves to a dreamy Latin-infused first course and then a substantial, profound entree. It was created to satisfy the widest variety of musical tastes. Mozart’s famous overture from the opera The Impresario sparkles with wit and humor while Como un Sueño, (As in a Dream) has been described as radiantly beautiful, fresh and arresting. Mendelssohn’s “Reformation Symphony” is so called because it contains a fantasia on Martin Luther’s hymn “A Mighty Fortress is Our God” and alludes to other Lutheran themes throughout. Participation in music, as inspired by the Protestant Reformation, has had a profound effect on communities across America. Without a doubt, the Fox Valley Symphony was created as part of these traditions, and we thank our community with this performance.

Oshkosh Area Humane Society

OAHS is urging the community to become Foster Care providers for animals or adopting families

The Oshkosh Area Humane Society is a Life Saving Shelter.  “No animal will be euthanized for space”.  OAHS cannot accomplish this mission with out the support of the community.  Ordinary people are doing extraordinary things; opening their hearts and homes to cats and kittens in need of temporary housing, saving lives.  Plain and simple; the need for feline foster homes is urgent!

The first step in becoming a foster home is to attend our Intro to Foster Care Class, the 2nd Thursday of every month at the shelter from 6-7pm.

Your generosity with your time, home and love will save lives.
