WAUSAU, Wis. (WFRV) – One man is dead after being fatally hit by a vehicle late Monday night while running from police, authorities said.
According to a release from the Marathon County Sheriff’s Office, officers from the Wausau Police Department responded to a report of a person lying in the westbound lane of State Highway 29.

Upon arrival, police say the man lying in the road claimed he had a firearm and took off running westbound on State Highway 29.
At 11:26 p.m., officers state the man crossed into the eastbound lanes of the highway and was hit by a vehicle near 72nd Avenue in Wausau.
Wausau police began administering first aid immediately to the fleeing man, with Wausau Fire/EMS arriving shortly after to assist before later pronouncing the man dead at the scene.

The two occupants inside the vehicle were said to have sustained minor injuries, and the roadway was closed for about five hours while crews worked to process and clear the scene.
No other information is available at this time, and an investigation into the incident remains ongoing by the Marathon County Sheriff’s Office.
