MADISON, Wis. (WFRV) – For 34 years, United States Attorney Timothy M. O’Shea has served with the Western District of Wisconsin, and on Friday, he announced his retirement.
According to the release, the University of Wisconsin Law graduate, U.S. Attorney O’Shea, started as an intern in January 1991, before he was hired as an assistant in the criminal division eight months later. He served in the role for 11 years, until he was appointed as the Senior Litigation Counsel in 2002.

In 2018, O’Shea was appointed as the First Assistant U.S. Attorney, serving that role until 2021, and as Acting Civil Chief from September 2020 until January 2021. In March 2021, he was appointed as the Acting U.S. Attorney, officially moving into his current role in April 2022.
U.S. Attorney O’Shea prosecuted countless federal crimes in over three decades with the Department of Justice, including money laundering, weapons and other violent offenses.
U.S. Attorney O’Shea also served as the lead prosecutor in United States v. Sinovel, the only federal jury trial and conviction of a Chinese company for trade secret theft. He was the chief federal law enforcement officer in the Western District of Wisconsin, as he was responsible for all federal prosecutions and civil litigation in the district.
U.S. Attorney O’Shea released the following statement with his retirement announcement:
“It’s been a privilege to serve the citizens of the Western District of Wisconsin and to work with such a dedicated and talented group of attorneys and legal professionals. I greatly enjoyed my years with the Department of Justice, and for the last four years, it’s been an honor to serve Western Wisconsin as U.S. Attorney.”

Assistant U.S. Attorney Chadwick Elgersma will serve as Acting U.S. Attorney until a formal nomination is made by President Donald Trump and confirmed by the U.S. Senate. Elgersma has served in the assistant role since 2017, while previously working as a Federal Bureau of Investigation Special Agent.
