MADISON, Wis. (WFRV) – The Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources (DNR) is urging people who go out on ATVs and UTVs over the Fourth of July weekend to be safe, and especially to ride sober.
According to the release, 19 people have been killed in 2025 in ATV/UTV crashes, with most not wearing helmets or seatbelts. The release added that speed and alcohol played a part in them. Over half of the fatal ATV/UTV crashes last year involved alcohol as well.

“Whether you’re exploring scenic backroads, cruising through the Northwoods or simply out for a day of adventure, a clear head is the best gear you can bring,” the release said.
In addition, wearing a helmet and seatbelt is critical, especially in the event of an incident.
The DNR’s off-highway vehicle administrator, Lieutenant Jacob Holsclaw, urged people to be safe while enjoying some of the nation’s best ATV and UTV riding spots.
“Wisconsin has some of the best ATV and UTV riding in the country, and we want everyone to enjoy it safely,” Lt. Holsclaw said via the release. “Riding sober means you’re more alert, more in control and more likely to enjoy a safe return at the end of the day.”
In addition, riders are asked to make sure their ATVs/UTVs are legal in the state, as UTVs that are too wide create safety problems. The following restrictions apply:
- UTV maximum width is 65 inches, measured outside of the wheel rim-to-rim
- Modifying factory width is illegal
- Operating one that is wider than 65 inches on public roads or trails is illegal
Violating these guidelines can result in citations.
