GREEN BAY, Wis. (WFRV) – Local and state school leaders gathered at Southwest High School to talk about the FASFA form, and the timeframe to send in your application has opened for the year.
A main goal in having this press conference was to get the word out to apply, even if your student isn’t thinking about college at all.
“Sometimes students, and families, say no to college, because they feel as though they might not be able to afford it, or can’t. Unless you complete the FASFA form, you aren’t gonna know how much you are gonna get,” says Michael Whisler, Principal of Southwest High School.
The recent government shutdown has many believing that this could derail people from applying. But that is further from the truth.
“Just before the government shut down the Department of Education, it issued a memorandum indicating that the FASFA process was going to continue, and so we have not had those experiences as a result of the shutdown, and the last statistics that were available nationally are that this was the best start to the FASFA applications ever,” says Jay Rothman, President of the Universities of Wisconsin.

Making it easier, and more convenient for students to apply for the FASFA, removing the stress of the steps needed to take to apply to college.
“This is the key in the modern world, right? We have to remove all the steps that feel like impediments to get where they are sitting in a class and learning, and you have to remove those as fast as possible,” says Chancellor of UWGB Michael Alexander. “That is why the FASFA is important.”
Letting high school staff help their students think about life after high school.
“We are encouraging kids to think about post-secondary options, whether that be straight into the work force, go into a technical college, or a four-year institution, or beyond,” Whisler added.
