GREEN BAY, Wis. (WFRV) – All ice fishermen in the Green Bay and Sturgeon Bay areas are being advised to look out for and use extreme caution while out on Lake Michigan, as the United States Coast Guard says it is continuing ice-breaking operations.
According to a release from the U.S. Coast Guard Great Lakes, with ice continuing to form on Lake Michigan, the Coast Guard Cutter Mobile Bay (WTGB 103) will continue its ice-breaking operations in order to clear a path for commercial vessels in both Green Bay and Sturgeon Bay.
WisDOT: Why it’s salt over sand when treating icy roads
Officials say these ice-breaking operations can weaken the ice far beyond the immediate path of the vessel, creating unpredictable conditions with inconsistent thickness of the ice.
All fishermen and recreational users are asked to keep a lookout and use extreme caution if going out on the ice near the areas of these ice-breaking operations. Those who venture out on the ice are also being advised to keep a safe distance from ice-breaking vessels and areas where the ice has recently been broken.
Our top priority is the safety of everyone on the ice. We urge all ice fishermen to remain vigilant and avoid areas where ice- breaking operations are taking place.
