(WFRV) – A male cougar was found dead in central Wisconsin after traveling from Nebraska.
According to the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources (DNR), on February 9 a dead cougar was reported to the Adams County Sheriff’s Office in Wisconsin. The cougar was reportedly found on the railroad tracks and was reported by railroad staff.

Officials say the cougar most likely died after an apparent train strike. However the DNR will necropsy the animal to try to confirm the cause of death.
The animal was reportedly wearing a radio collar and ear tags. Officials say the cougar, which was male, was collared around age 1 in western Nebraska.
In early January, the cougar was seen in northwest Wisconsin and went across to Marathon, Portage, and Adams County. Officials say this is a classic case of a young male cougar leaving its natal range to find a mate.

The collar was not sending any data for ‘many months’, the DNR said. However it was photographed multiple times on its journey from Nebraska.
Officials said the collar will be sent back to Nebraska to see if there is any additional data on the collar.
