(NEXSTAR) – The United States men’s hockey team defeated Canada 2-one in overtime to win the gold medal at the Winter Olympics in Italy. The victory concludes the winter games in Milan Cortina as international attention shifts toward the Los Angeles 2028 Summer Games.
The win represents the first Olympic gold for the U.S. men’s hockey team since the 1980 “Miracle on Ice” in Lake Placid. As the focus turns to Los Angeles, organizers are preparing to host more than 11,000 athletes competing in 36 different sports.
Organizers marked a milestone for the upcoming summer games earlier this year by lighting the cauldron at the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum. The event signaled the official start of ticket registration for the 2028 games. Officials for the event say they are working nonstop as the countdown continues.
The summer games in Los Angeles will include five new and returning sports. The lineup of additions features baseball, softball, cricket, flag football, lacrosse and squash. These will be among the 36 sports played throughout the 16-day event.

Venues for the competitions are scattered across the Southern California area and beyond. Major sites include the Rose Bowl in Pasadena, which will host matches during the games. SoFi Stadium, the home of the Los Angeles Rams and Chargers and the Intuit Dome, the new home of the Los Angeles Clippers, are also scheduled to host events.
Other venues include Santa Anita Park and the Long Beach Aquatic Center. Venice Beach is designated as the site where the first medal of the 2028 games will be awarded during the triathlon.
While the majority of events remain in Southern California, men’s and women’s soccer matches will be played at stadiums nationwide. Selected host cities for the soccer tournament include New York, St. Louis, Nashville and Columbus, Ohio.
Organizers for LA 28 described the intensity of the upcoming event as being equivalent to hosting seven Super Bowls every day. This level of activity will be maintained for the 16 days of the Olympic Games and the 14 days of the Paralympic Games.
