WAUSAU, Wis. (WFRV) – After a Wausau resident called with concerns about speeding vehicles at a local intersection, an officer got firsthand video of the dangers that the crosswalk presents.
“If you don’t stop for us, who do you stop for?” Wausau PD’s Facebook post began.
On Tuesday, March 3, the Department got a call from a resident who was concerned about speeding vehicles and crosswalk safety along South 17th Avenue near Marathon Park.

After the call, a Lieutenant began to monitor the crosswalk and was nearly hit by a vehicle while crossing the intersection. It was noted that the crosswalk is marked and has warning signs leading up to it.
Especially as the weather warms, we need to be sure to slow down and watch out for pedestrians and bicyclists. Every year, we see pedestrians being struck by vehicles across our city. Yes, pedestrians have a responsibility not to suddenly leave a curb into the path of a vehicle. But once a pedestrian is occupying an uncontrolled crosswalk such as this one, you shall yield the right-of-way to them. If you’re not seeing a large uniformed police officer, are you seeing someone walking a dog, an elder, or a child? Slow down and let’s keep Wausau a safe place to drive, walk, and ride.
