GREEN BAY, Wis. (WFRV) – As the Green Bay women’s basketball team was playing in Indianapolis, many fans gathered to cheer on the team during their Horizon League championship game against Youngstown State.
Many gathered at The Bar on Lime Kiln to watch, cheer and support the Lady Phoenix, knowing that with the season they had, a win was the most likely outcome.
“We got a bunch of people that came in for their last season, and what is great is that they are gelling and playing like a team,” said Mary Heilmann from Green Bay. “Funny thing is, they didn’t know each other a year ago.”
Fans and alumni are supporting the team that means so much to the community.
But as all fans do, some coaching from the couch made its way to the forefront.
“Well, we need to get a few more rebounds, do a little boxing out and get some three-pointers going,” said Heilmann.
The team has had recent success, coming off the heels of head coach Kayla Karius in her second season.
And the fans are noticing.
“It’s unbelievable to be a fan of this team. I started going to these games when my daughters were like 6 and 9 years old, and I always tell them that they are lucky to be supporting a winning team, and that has gone through coach Hammerle all the way to coach Karius,” said Glen Tilot.
Green Bay beat Youngstown State 57-49, making it three straight March Madness tournaments and the 20th overall.
The team and fans now wait for Selection Sunday to see who the Phoenix will be playing.
