(WFRV) – Dr. Paul Bergl joined Stacy Engebretson during Wednesday’s Off the Desk to discuss a variety of topics, including what it was like when they welcomed their first class of resident physicians last week.
Bergl is ThedaCare’s Internal Medicine Residency Program Director, and the first topic discussed was about last Friday, when Bergl and ThedaCare welcomed its first class of resident physicians during last week’s Match Day.
About 2,000 applicants reached out to ThedaCare for residency, completing interviews with multiple people, and 15 were selected by the many professionals involved in the process.
“We were just elated to see the class list that we got,” began Dr. Bergl. “This was months of effort in recruitment, and when we saw the 15 future physicians that are joining this organization, we were truly thrilled.”

Dr. Bergl also addressed the physician shortage that Wisconsin is currently seeing and how this program will help.
“By 2030, Wisconsin is projected to have a shortage of roughly 1,000 Primary Care Physicians, and if you expand that to physicians of all types, we are probably looking at about 4,000 to 6,000,” stated Dr. Bergl. “The physician shortage is one of the biggest reasons why we are doing this, and the statistics are pretty compelling that if you can train people locally, they are likely to stay.”
