First responders arrived within minutes and began lifesaving efforts, but the child was pronounced dead at the scene.
Investigators say preliminary information indicates three young children had been placed in a vehicle parked in the driveway of their home. In a brief moment when their parents went back inside to retrieve a forgotten item, a 4-year-old child located a loaded firearm in the vehicle’s center console. The firearm discharged, striking a 2-year-old sibling.
No other injuries were reported.
Authorities say a comprehensive investigation into the circumstances is ongoing. Any potential criminal charges will be determined at the conclusion of the investigation.
