MILWAUKEE, Wis. (WFRV) – One person is dead and eight officers were placed on leave after a homicide suspect in Wisconsin got into a shootout with police on Monday afternoon.
According to a release from the Milwaukee Police Department, a homicide took place on Monday near the intersection of 7th Street and Mitchell Street and officers were seeking a vehicle tied to that incident.
Later in the afternoon, that same vehicle was said to be involved in a shots-fired incident near the 1700 block of North 35th Street. At. 4:47 p.m., officers found the vehicle and attempted to make a traffic stop, but the suspect fled, leading to a vehicle pursuit.

The pursuit was brought to an end on South 35th Street near West National Avenue after the suspect crashed their vehicle. Police say the suspect then exited the vehicle and began shooting at officers, who then returned fire.
The suspect, a 31-year-old man, was shot during the shootout and was taken to a hospital, where he later died due to his injuries. Officers were able to recover the suspect’s weapons at the scene of the incident, and no one else was hit by the gunfire.
A 34-year-old person was hurt in the crash that ended the pursuit and was taken to the hospital with what is believed to be non-fatal injuries.
Following the incident, as per routine policy, the following eight officers were placed on administrative duty following their involvement in the incident:
- 35-year-old with over 8 years of service
- 33-year-old with over 14 years of service
- 33-year-old with over 9 years of service
- 33-year-old with over 8 years of service
- 30-year-old male with over 11 years of service
- 30-year-old male with over 7 years of service
- 29-year-old with over 3 years of service
- 26-year-old male with over 7 months of service
An investigation into the incident is ongoing by the Milwaukee Area Investigative Team with the Wauwatosa Police Department leading.
No other information is available at this time and video related to the incident is expected to be released in accordance with Standard Operating Procedure 575.
