(WFRV) – Congressman Tony Wied (R-WI-08) is continuing to emphasize his proposal for a Spear Act, designed to protect the “Wisconsin Tradition of Sturgeon Spearing.”
In a sit-down with Local 5, Rep. Wied said that he trusts Wisconsinites, in spite of a 60-day notice against the United States Fish and Wildlife Service over allegations that it illegally denied protections to lake sturgeon.
The notice was filed by the Center for Biological Diversity, and if action isn’t taken, they’ll file a lawsuit. Representative Wied said any bans on sturgeon spearing disrupt a way of life in the state, also citing the great health of sturgeon in the area.
“Local Wisconsinites with public and private partnerships have the healthiest population of sturgeon in the country,” Rep. Wied said.

In a Zoom, the Center for Biological Diversity clarified that it has no problem with the Lake Winnebago system sturgeon and that spearing should continue there as it’s the largest self-sustaining population in the world, but that there are other areas of concern.
