GREEN BAY, Wis. (WFRV) – Valentine’s Day is typically associated with flowers, chocolates and heartfelt cards. But at the Wisconsin Humane Society, love looks a little different.
It has four legs and a wagging tail.

While families may be excited to share photos of a new puppy or kitten received as a holiday gift, staff at the Wisconsin Humane Society say winter is actually one of the slowest seasons for animal shelters.
“The biggest seasons for us are the summer months, because there’s a lot more animal movement,” said Corey Viars, media specialist with the Wisconsin Humane Society.
Even though fewer animals may be entering shelters during the colder months, Viars said the need for support never slows down. To help cover ongoing costs, the Wisconsin Humane Society has launched its Valentine’s Day fundraiser, Double the Love.
Funds raised through the campaign will go toward essential expenses, including food, medical care and daily needs for animals waiting to find permanent homes.
While Valentine’s Day celebrates love, shelter staff emphasize that commitment should last long after the holiday ends. They urge people to think carefully before giving a pet as a gift, noting that one of the most common reasons animals are surrendered is housing-related challenges.

“In Green Bay and across the state, we’re seeing a decrease in renters allowing pets into their homes,” Viars said. “That’s one of the issues driving more animals into our shelter.”
