(WFRV) – A handful of Wisconsin residents have returned home to the Badger State after a violent weekend of unrest left them stranded in Mexico.
The violence was sparked after the Mexican military killed El Mencho, the reported leader of the Jalisco New Generation Cartel, during a military operation.

Between the military operation and the ongoing violence and unrest that followed, about 70 people were killed as cartel gunmen blocked streets by setting cars on fire and fighting with Mexican troops.
The travelers returning to Wisconsin landed at Mitchell International Airport in Milwaukee and described their experience as quite shocking.
Our hotel room overlooks the city, and all of a sudden, when you looked out, there was black plumes of explosions everywhere going on, and we weren’t exactly sure what was happening.

Meanwhile, back in Mexico, officials say things are back under control for the most part, but the State Department is still urging anyone trying to go to Mexico to start rethinking their plans.
