GREEN BAY, Wis. (WFRV) – As fishing season gets underway, anglers are being reminded to do their part when it comes to protecting our waterways by properly disposing of broken gear and trash.
Discarded fishing line, hooks, and packaging may seem small, but they can have serious impacts on wildlife and the environment. Many animals could become entangled in abandoned lines or be injured by sharp hooks, while plastic waste can pollute lakes and rivers for years.
Research shows that discarded fishing line can exist in the environment for over a hundred years. This is more true as we look at materials such as monofilament or braided plastics.
Because these lines are nearly invisible in the water, birds and fish are more susceptible to becoming entangled or even injured.
Studies have also shown that animals can mistake small pieces of plastic or bait packaging for food, potentially causing internal injuries or even death in some cases.
Beyond wildlife, leftover fishing gear can also affect water quality. As plastics break down over time, they begin to form microplastics, which are tiny plastic particles that may mix into the food chain.
These microplastics create concerns as to their potential long-term effects on ecosystems and even the potential to harm human health.
Experts say that one of the simplest ways to help is to pack out what you bring in. It is also encouraged that you try to take the extra step. Small practices like cleaning up what others may have left may seem like a small contribution, but it can have large impacts.
Taking a few extra moments to clean up not only protects wildlife, but it can also work towards keeping our waterways safe and enjoyable for everyone.
