DE PERE, Wis. (WFRV) – Officials with the Lawrence Fire Department have announced that they will soon be setting a town-owned home on fire as part of a live training operation.
According to a release from the Lawrence Fire Department, the live fire safety training exercises will take place on April 11 from 8:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. at a house on 2218 Williams Grant Drive in De Pere.

The house being used is a Town of Lawrence-owned home, and the training is being done in conjunction with other neighboring fire departments.
Officials say the training will follow all of the regulations set in place in National Fire Protection Association 1403: Standard on Live Training Evolutions. The training will use untreated lumber and hay during the burns to minimize the toxins in the smoke to start the fires.
The town-owned home will eventually have the structure itself ignited and burned. Smoke may be visible at times, but it will be much less than what is seen during a typical house fire. All precautions are said to have been made for the safety of the surrounding on-site properties and all direct neighbors were notified of the upcoming training.

Officials say this type of training is essential to making sure the community can be provided with well-trained firefighters. This specific exercise allows the Lawrence Fire Department personnel to enhance suppression activities and work safely in a controlled environment, preparing them for future fire and potential life safety needs.
The Lawrence Fire Department is working with the Wisconsin DNR to make sure all of the necessary environmental permits have been completed. The department is also working with the National Weather Service to monitor the forecast, making sure conditions are favorable for good smoke dispersion.
