GREEN BAY, Wis. (WFRV) – Officials with the Wisconsin Humane Society announced on Monday the unfortunate death of Stella, the one-year-old husky who appeared to have survived being shot and a 30-foot fall off an I-41 overpass.
According to a post on social media, those with the Wisconsin Humane Society say Stella suddenly passed away over the weekend.
After surviving and overcoming being shot, falling off the I-41 overpass near Shawano Avenue, and going through open-chest surgery, it was believed that the worst was behind her.
Officials say Stella had gone out for her nightly walk at the WHS Green Bay Campus and seemed as happy and vibrant as ever. An hour later, they say she was found deceased in her kennel.
Stella is said to have captured the hearts of many people across the state following what was said to be an incredible recovery journey. While this is not how those at the WHS say they wanted her story to end, instead of dying on the side of a road, Stella died with a whole community backing her.
Officials with WHS say it started with the strangers who pulled over to help safely guide her to safety from the side of the road, then to the team at Blue Pearl in Appleton, who worked tirelessly to save her in the early critical parts of her recovery journey, to the staff and volunteers who interacted with her every day over the past several weeks and finally to the rest of the community who helped with donations to cover the medical bills.
This one hurts. No doubt about it. But we’re so glad we tried. Thank you to every last person who supported her along the way. Rest easy, sweet Stella.

While Stella’s cause of death will remain unknown until after further testing, the veterinary team suspects it to be the cause of something related to a cardiac/pulmonary event.
