DE PERE, Wis. (WFRV) – It wasn’t long ago that long snapper Brett Welsing was playing high school football just outside Green Bay at West De Pere High School.
Now, the 2022 graduate is chasing a shot at the NFL.
GM Brian Gutekunst says Packers will need to boost their cornerback depth in draft
After committing to Drake University, Brett quickly made the most of his opportunity: Earning the starting long snapper job as a freshman and never looking back—racking up a laundry list of accolades over the next four years.
Now, back in northeast Wisconsin, Welsing is getting to work with a familiar training partner: his dad.
“My dad has helped me out a ton. My whole family… they’ve been so supportive of me, and I wouldn’t be where I am without them,” Welsing said.
His father, Rocky, says the belief in an NFL future didn’t come overnight, but grew as others began to take notice.
“When people start telling you, ‘Hey, you might want to keep this going… you meet all the criteria of an NFL long snapper,’” Rocky said. “That gave him belief that he might be able to do this.”
As a long snapper, it’s unlikely Brett hears his name called during the 2026 NFL Draft, but once it’s over, he’ll be waiting for the phone to ring, hoping it’s an NFL front office on the other end.
“I’m just hoping for a chance,” Welsing said. “Because this is what you’re working towards your whole life.”
