MANITOWOC, Wis. (WFRV) – Manitowoc officials are still weighing their options concerning the Madison Elementary School site and whether to purchase it for one singular ‘George Washington.’
The recommendation from the School District to the Board of Education is still to accept the city’s offer to buy the site for $1, and an informational meeting on Monday night gave residents an inside look at the proposal.

The recommendation is based on saving money, future planning and a united front with district and city officials, Superintendent Lee Thennes said during the meeting.
“The city gave us that property in the 1950s when we built the school,” Thennes said. “We want to work together and there have been several times where the city has helped us out. In this particular case, the building is a big liability on that property.
Thennes also said estimates have it in the millions just to tear it down to prepare for a sale, and that the district has no interest in playing around with public funding.
