Favre speaks at rally in support of Donald Trump

ASHWAUBENON, Wis. (WFRV) – In the sea of red, white, and blue at the Trump rally at the Resch Center on Wednesday, there was also plenty of green and yellow Brett Favre jerseys.

That’s because the Packers legendary quarterback was back in the Titletown area to speak at the rally, joining a campaign event to offer his support to the former president.

“I want to address the comment that Joe Biden made yesterday or last night that said the supporters of Donald Trump are garbage, I can assure you we’re not garbage,” Favre said referring to comments that president Biden made during a call with a Hispanic advocacy group. “How dare he say that? Looking out, I see police officers, teachers, nurses, grandparents, students, I see everyday Americans that make this country great.”

For some Packers fans attending a Trump rally for the first time, they told Local 5 News that Favre speaking was the little extra push they needed to come out.

“I think it’s awesome, the moment that I heard (Favre would be here) I knew we were coming,” said Tom Laurent from Green Bay. “He’s my favorite player and just to see him come out and speak at an event like this it’s awesome.”

Laurent was one of the hundreds of people decked out in Packers gear for the rally. He was wearing a Favre No. 4 jersey.

Green Bay family continues Belgian pie-making tradition

“It means a lot that Favre is here tonight and he’s one of my favorite quarterbacks,” said Sara Laughlin who is also from Green Bay. “I think he is a man with values, he did wonderful things for the Green Bay community and our football here in Green Bay.”

In his remarks on Wednesday night, Favre said he feels like the country was better off when Trump was president four years ago than it is now. He said, like the Packers organization, Trump is a winner.

“It would be insane to give Kamala Harris four more years in office,” said Favre. “So it’s time to bench Kamala and put in the star quarterback, Donald Trump.”

Favre didn’t speak for long, but Packers fans said after the rally that his speech resonated with the crowd.

“I even noticed that Brett Favre looked a little emotional, a little teary eyed when he came out,” said Melissa Young a Trump supporter from Neenah. “Such a beautiful reception and I can feel that he believes in the cause.”

“It was great, I have always liked him (Favre) and he’s a good man too,” added Barbara Peichl who is a Trump supporter from Appleton.

Current Packers running back AJ Dillon was also at the rally. Former president Donald Trump shouted out both Favre and Dillon during his remarks, joking that No. 4 received a louder round of applause than he did.

“Thank you, Brett, what a great honor and what a great champion,” Trump said about Favre.

In 2020, Favre tweeted out that he’s voting for Trump because he believed that the former president would protect free speech, gun rights, and the police and military. The two men have played golf together.

He also talked about why he supports Donald Trump in a podcast with Jason Whitlock in 2023.

While the reception for Favre on Wednesday at the Resch Center was very positive, not everybody was excited to see No. 4 back in Titletown offering political takes.

“I’m not a big fan of him right now so I guess it just cements that position that I’m not a big fan of his,” said Sue Hebert of Escanaba, Mi. who says she’s voting for Kamala Harris.

A Harris campaign spokesperson released the following statement about Trump’s rally in Ashwaubenon on Wednesday night.

“Donald Trump is increasingly unstable and unhinged, focused on himself and his own grievances instead of American families. That is why Green Bay’s Republican state Senator Robert Cowles has joined with dozens of other Republicans, independents, and Democrats from across the state to endorse Vice President Harris. A second Trump term would rip away our reproductive rights and raise costs by nearly $4,000 a year on middle class families – that’s not what Green Bay voters are looking for.”

Favre spent 16 years with the Packers winning a Super Bowl and three MVP awards. He finished up his career with the New York Jets and Minnesota Vikings.

The former Packers quarterback has become entangled in a welfare misspending scandal in his home state of Mississippi. According to the Associated Press, he doesn’t face any criminal charges, but is getting sued as state officials try to recover misspent money.

In September, Favre announced that doctors had diagnosed him with Parkinson’s Disease.

Packers fans at the rally said they hope that Favre’s speech at the rally can make a difference when people vote in this election.

“I hope that it helps some of the people who are on the fence,” said Laurent.

“On both sides I hope they’re listening to the candidates and what they have to say rather than listening to some person that wants more publicity,” said Hebert who said she doesn’t like Trump or Favre.

Favre said he’s getting involved during this election cycle because of the high stakes of Tuesday’s election. Both Trump (Milwaukee) and Harris (Appleton area and Milwaukee) will hold rallies in Wisconsin on Friday.
