109.7 pound fish the largest harvest as three days remain in Winnebago sturgeon spearing season

(WFRV) – With just three days left in the sturgeon spearing season, people are not yet giving up on their harvests, according to the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources (DNR) February 20 harvest update.

The largest harvested sturgeon spearing of the day came from Patrick Nolan, who speared a 109.7-pound, 75.5-inch female, one of 27 lake sturgeon harvested in the Winnebago system on Thursday.

Of the 27, four were juvenile females, 12 were adult females with the other 11 being males.

Darren Pautsch also speared a 100+ pound sturgeon, harvesting a 101-pound, 74.9-inch female at the southwest Winnebago registration station.

Big smiles at the southwest Winnebago registration station as Darren Pautsch’s fish just squeaks in over 100 pounds and is the biggest fish for the day (a 101-pound, 74.9-inch, F1 female) [Wisconsin DNR]

However, the Upriver Lakes did not hit its 90% harvest trigger on Thursday, with just five harvests throughout the day.

The DNR continues to urge spearers to be wary of ice conditions as it is never 100% safe. More information is available on the DNR’s ice safety page.
