GREEN BAY, Wis. (WFRV) – As Packers president and CEO Mark Murphy announced the name of the newest Green Bay Packer, the Lambeau Field crowd erupted and so did the thousands of fans outside, watching at the Draft Theater.
The Green and Gold(en) faithful, if you will, were certainly thrilled as their beloved Packers made Matthew Golden the newest Green Bay player.
Packers & NFL confirm general admission paused for 2025 NFL Draft due to maximum capacity
The fans inside and outside Lambeau Field chanted the classic Green Bay slogan, “Go Pack Go!”
Golden grabbed his Packers hat and walked onto the stage, roared to the crowd and bear hugged Goodell, before he took hold of a No. 1 Green and Gold jersey donning his name. Golden said in his Zoom availability later that it was emotional hearing his name and walking on stage.
“It all goes back to me wanting to be drafted in the 1st round,” Golden said. “Once I got that call, I answered it and they told me they’re picking me. It was a lot of excitement.”
Golden joked that he hadn’t gotten a chance to check his phone as of the Zoom interview, and he said it was an incredible feeling.
“My phone is in my pocket right now and it’s been going off since I got on stage,” Golden said. “When I went out there and got in there with the fans, that was the best feeling I’ve ever had in my whole life.”

Golden is the first wide receiver the Packers have selected in the first round in 23 years, and the fans for years had begged for this, just like the City of Green Bay for nearly a decade had wanted to host the NFL Draft.
It was a perfect moment, as the desire for the team to host the draft and the desire of the fans to see a wideout get a phone call from the Packers in Round One were both satisfied on the same day.
