Shining sun & warmer weather lead to 81 lake sturgeon harvested in Winnebago system as season nears end

(WFRV) – With just one day remaining in the Winnebago system for sturgeon spearing season, the sun finally showed up with some warmer weather, leading to better harvest totals, the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources reported in its February 22 harvest update.

81 lake sturgeon were harvested throughout the Winnebago system on Saturday, with 73 speared in Lake Winnebago itself:

  • 10 juvenile females
  • 32 adult females
  • 31 males

Spearing season heads into its final weekend with success across the systems

Nine fish over 100 pounds were harvested in the Winnebago system. The largest was a 144.1-pound and 72.8-inch F4 female recorded at the Southwest Winnebago registration station. One 100-plus pound lake sturgeon was harvested in the Upriver system as well.

With tomorrow being the final day to go, the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources added that the following registrations will be closed:

  • Indian Point
  • Pipe
  • North Winnebago
