(WFRV) – Wisconsinites are heading into the final weekend of the Winnebago spearing season, with many taking to the ice Friday for one of their last chances to harvest a lake sturgeon.
The Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources (DNR) reported that 52 fish were speared Friday across the Winnebago system. Of those, 43 came from Lake Winnebago, consisting of five juvenile females, 19 adult females, and 19 males.

One of the highlights of the day was a 124.1-pound, 72-inch F2 female sturgeon, harvested and registered at the southwest Winnebago registration station by Bob Berghuis. This marks the 13th sturgeon over 100 pounds registered at the station this season.

Spearers on the Upriver Lakes also saw success, registering nine lake sturgeon—one adult female and eight males—bringing the season totals to 42 juvenile females, 46 adult females, and 219 males.
With favorable weather conditions expected, the Wisconsin DNR anticipates a strong turnout over the weekend as spearers take to the ice for one last opportunity.
