Wisconsin man stopped for defective lamps gets one year in prison for cocaine possession

HARTFORD, Wis. (WFRV) – A Wisconsin man who was arrested in September after a traffic stop stemming from defective registration lamps led to the seizure of cocaine is now sentenced to a year in prison.

According to the Hartford Police Department, the traffic stop occurred on September 24 after Officer Chojnacki stopped a vehicle on State Highway 83 near Clover Road with defective registration lamps. The registered owner also had a suspended license.

Officers noticed in plain sight that the car contained a glass pipe used to smoke crack cocaine and subsequently removed the driver, 42-year-old Douglas Bannister of Merrill. Bannister admitted that he also had a THC pen on him.

While searching Bannister, officers found a bag with roughly 86 grams of cocaine on him, and a vehicle search followed shortly after, which unveiled multiple other items relating to the drugs, including cash and clean urine samples.

On February 14, Bannister was found guilty of possession with intent-cocaine and sentenced to a year in prison with three years of extended supervision, or probation.
