Shawano kids dress up as their favorite school resource officer

SHAWANO, Wis. (WFRV) – A heartwarming surprise for a Shawano police officer.

At Hillcrest Primary School in Shawano, school resource officer Tyler Thornborrow gets the celebrity treatment whenever he pops his head into any of the classrooms. Wildly popular with all the students, he’s become a positive role model for all the kids who come through the school.

“Connecting with the students and being able to make a difference in their lives is incredibly rewarding,” he said.

A few weeks back, the kids at Hillcrest had an opportunity to come to school dressed as the dream job that they want someday. To Thornborrow’s surprise over 20 of the students chose to dress as a police officer. Many of them told Local 5 News they did this because they wanted to be just like Thornborrow when they grow up.

He was able to snap a picture with the students who dressed like police officers to commemorate the moment.

“Sometimes when you need a pick me up you look at a picture like that and realize why we are in these positions to begin with,” he said.

Thornborrow said he’s been a school resource officer for the last three years and that he loves his job. He said his goal is to be a mentor for the kids and to give them a positive view of law enforcement.

“He’s keeping us safe and he’s helping us, that’s how they’re viewing me doing my job and that’s really heartwarming,” he said. “You would not build a house on a bad foundation. If we’re able to add to the building block of these children’s lives (in a positive way) that’s something we’re going to (do).”
