Treasurer of northern Wisconsin town arrested, accused of stealing over $300,000

ACKLEY, Wis. (WFRV) – Authorities in Langlade County say they have arrested the Treasurer of a northern Wisconsin town after it was discovered that he was allegedly mishandling money and stole more than $300,000.

According to a release from the Langlade County Sheriff’s Office, deputies received a complaint from a Town of Ackley board member claiming that Treasurer Gary Kieper was mishandling town money.

Officials say that during an investigation, they learned 69-year-old Kieper was also the Treasurer for Rural Fire Control and there were also concerns about the way he handled money for them as well.

Deputies say they were able to trace thousands of dollars transferred from the Town of Ackley and Rural Fire Control accounts into multiple personal accounts owned by Kieper. Up to this point, authorities say Kieper has stolen more than $300,000.

Kieper was arrested and charges including theft of more than $100,000 and Misconduct in Public Office have been referred to the Langlade County District Attorney’s Office.

At this time, no other information is available and an investigation into the incident is ongoing.
